#42 H5P – Column Activity Tutorial

·

🧩 H5P Column Module (WordPress)

The Column module in H5P acts as a container that allows multiple H5P content types to be displayed in a single, vertically stacked layout. Rather than navigating through content one module at a time (as in question sets or presentations), users scroll through all activities on a single page.

Each H5P activity placed within a column maintains its own layout, settings, and scoring. For example, dialog cards, multiple choice questions, presentations, fill-in-the-blanks, and essays can all appear one after the other in a linear format. Visual separators (horizontal lines) can be placed between modules for clarity, but there’s no way to group scoring across them—each remains an independent unit.

A column can contain both static content (like text and instructions) and interactive content (like quizzes or drag-and-drop tasks). Pasting pre-existing H5P modules into a column is supported, making it easy to reuse previously created activities without duplication of effort.

🔍 Key Behavior

  • Displays multiple H5P modules in a single scrollable view
  • Each activity is scored separately with its own “Check” button
  • There is no cumulative score
  • Activities retain their individual behavior settings
  • All content is presented on a single page, avoiding slide-based navigation

🧠 Example Use Cases

  • Self-contained review lessons: Combine a video, summary text, and a mix of practice activities like MCQs, fill-in-the-blanks, and an essay response into one flow.
  • Pronunciation or vocabulary practice: Use dialog cards followed by short-answer or audio response tools.
  • Mini workbooks: Stack 5–10 exercises with brief instructions to create a self-paced unit on one skill.
  • Assessment practice: Offer learners a mock exam with various question types, all accessible without navigating across different screens.
  • Course module hubs: Combine course presentations, review questions, and reflection prompts in one package.

⚠️ Limitations

  • No final score that combines all activities
  • Individual modules are functionally disconnected
  • Can’t adjust spacing between modules—only a horizontal line separator is available
  • Activities are not submitted as a package (no centralized tracking)

🧾 Summary

The Column module offers a way to visually organize and bundle multiple interactive elements in a streamlined, vertical format. It’s especially useful for instructors or course designers who want to create a seamless learning experience without forcing learners to jump between separate modules. While it lacks integrated scoring or backend submission, it works well for practice, exploration, and low-stakes engagement.
