🎙️ Speak the Words Set – H5P Guide
A “Speak the Words Set” is an extended version of the original “Speak the Words” H5P content type. Unlike the single-question version, this one allows you to create multiple questions in a single activity — ideal for language learning, pronunciation training, and multilingual comprehension checks.
✅ Key Features
- Supports multiple questions.
- Users speak answers via microphone.
- Works only in Chrome.
- Supports multiple languages with accurate speech recognition.
- Provides feedback based on spoken responses.
🛠️ How to Create a “Speak the Words Set” Activity
1. Install the Content Type
- Go to H5P > Add New in WordPress.
- Search and install “Speak the Words Set” (not just “Speak the Words”).
2. Add Questions to the Set
You can add multiple questions, each with its own:
- Prompt or Task Description
- Accepted answers
- Language for voice recognition
- Feedback messages
✏️ Example Questions for Use Cases
🟦 Question 1: Basic Q&A in English
Field | Content |
---|---|
Task | What planet do we live on? |
Accepted Answers | Earth, Planet Earth, The Earth |
Language | English (US) |
Feedback | Good job! / Try again |
3. Set Up Scoring & Feedback (Optional)
- You can define score ranges for grading (e.g., 0–50 = fail, 60–100 = pass).
- Use the text overrides section to change default prompts (e.g., “Retry,” “Show Solution”).
4. Preview the Activity
Test questions one by one:
- Click the mic icon.
- Speak your answer.
- System will score and show what it thinks you said.
- Option to retry or show solution.
📊 User Experience Flow
- User sees a prompt: “What planet do we live on?”
- Speaks answer into mic: “Earth”
- System compares spoken input to accepted answers.
- Shows result: ✔️ Correct / ❌ Try again
- At the end: Finish button shows summary of results and all correct answers.
⚠️ Limitations & Suggestions
Limitation | Suggestion |
---|---|
Only works on Chrome | Ensure students use supported browser |
Requires microphone access | Grant mic permissions when prompted |
Whole-sentence scoring only | No partial credit for partially correct answers |
One question type only | Use within Question Set or Interactive Book to mix types |
✅ Great for ESL/EFL learners, vocabulary recall, foreign language practice, and pronunciation exercises.
🎓 Use Cases
Goal | How to Use |
---|---|
Vocabulary recall | Ask “What is X in language Y?” |
Pronunciation practice | Use full-sentence prompts |
Listening + speaking combo | Ask questions that must be answered orally |
Multilingual teaching | Switch languages for specific questions |
💡 Bonus Tip
To allow partial points or more detailed analysis, consider integrating this with an external speech evaluation tool — but as of now, H5P’s voice scoring is binary (correct/incorrect only).
